Sometimes you only need one concert to get noticed in the electronic music scene, overcrowded with DJs and producers who strive to survive on Soundcloud. It’s exactly what happened to Jayda G, who, after mixing at Dekmantel festival in The Netherlands, streamed online by Boiler Room, was overwhelmed with offers from all over the place. Selection has helped a lot, you can convince yourself of this by glancing at YouTube, but people have been fascinated by her stage appearance.
Jayda G has a special style for a DJ. She seems to mix for herself, not for the public, without expecting applause or any form of feedback from the crowds in front of her. She dances as if she were the only person in the club, tent or wherever she may choose to perform. You should expect the same at Electric Castle. You will dance along with her, because she has a contagious vibe. And several other talents:
She has a master’s degree in ‘Resource and Environmental Management’
We’re all concerned with the environment. Jayda G has taken this concern to the next level. To the academic level. The Canadian artist is obsessed with nature so she decided to become a scientist. She studied at Simon Fraser University of Vancouver, where she obtained her master’s degree, with a thesis on toxicology and environment protection. So she divides her time between working in the lab and in the studio. Her two enterprises have crossed:
She recorded an album inspired by nature
Finding inspiration in nature was, of course, inevitable. Her first album "Significant Changes" includes samples of whales she’s been studying throughout time. The very title of her record is inspired by an academic paper. There have been cases of producers incorporating nature sounds in their songs, but in Jayda G’s case, this has a special significance, given her activity as a scientist. She still is into this, but she put her research activity on hold in order to focus on her music:
She’s disconnected from the Berlin local scene, which makes her more original
Jayda G was born in Canada, and as her DJ-ing career progressed, she moved to Berlin, the capital of electronic music. She may have decided to do so because it is easier to find places to perform there. But she didn’t take advantage of the city night-life. According to several interviews she gave, she’s not at all integrated in the local scene and she doesn’t go out much. This helps her. She doesn’t pay attention to others and she manages to stay super-fresh. She only focuses to her own playlist. Which contains all the good stuff:
You’ll find a bit of everything in her mixes
Jayda G has no favorite genre for her mixes. She integrates everything from soul to Chicago house. But going beyond the tracks she chooses, Jayda G can read a dance floor. She never plans her setlist in advance. Everything you’ll get to listen to in Bonțida will take into account the location’s vibe. The music will be decided upon on the spot, so don’t expect a Dekmantel version 2.0. The only guaranteed thing about her set is that you’ll dance non-stop along her, and that she’ll lead the way.
